The Manhattan Fire Protection District is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Fire Chief John ‘Jack’ Fitzgerald, who retired after 52 ½ years of dedicated service to the department and the community. His exceptional career, which began on January 13, 1956, touched the lives of countless residents and shaped the future of fire safety and emergency medical services in Manhattan.
Chief Fitzgerald’s career in public service spanned several decades, beginning in the fire district and later extending to a distinguished role in local government. He was promoted to Assistant Chief in 1967, just one year before he was elected Mayor of Manhattan, a position he held for an impressive 22 years. His tenure as Mayor, from 1967 to 1989, made him the longest-serving mayor in the village’s history. As both a fire service leader and a local government official, Chief Fitzgerald’s commitment to the safety and well-being of Manhattan’s residents was unparalleled.
Throughout his career in the fire district, Chief Fitzgerald was instrumental in advancing fire safety and emergency medical services. He became a certified firefighter and paramedic, earning Illinois State Firefighter II certification in 1984 and Firefighter III certification in 1993. His leadership was recognized through numerous awards, including Officer of the Year, the EMS Award, and the Paramedic of the Year Award from the Will-Grundy EMS System in 1987. In 2006, he received the prestigious Dr. William McConnell Excellence in EMS Award, further solidifying his reputation as a dedicated public servant.
One of his most lasting contributions to the community was his advocacy for fire safety, particularly his work to pass a “zero tolerance” fire sprinkler ordinance, which continues to protect both residents and first responders to this day. His commitment to safety extended to all aspects of the fire district, ensuring that Manhattan remained a secure place for families and businesses alike.
In addition to his remarkable professional achievements, Chief Fitzgerald was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy of service lives on through his family, particularly his grandson, Lt. Edward Ludwig, and great-grandson, Connor Ludwig, who proudly continue the family’s tradition of commitment to the fire service.
As we remember Chief Fitzgerald’s legacy, the Manhattan Fire Protection District extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His impact on the community is immeasurable, and his contributions will be felt for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Chief Fitzgerald. Your leadership, dedication, and service will never be forgotten.
The family has invited friends, and colleagues to honor and celebrate the life of Chief Fitzgerald.
