At the Manhattan Fire Protection District, we believe in protecting our community beyond emergency response—we are committed to proactive safety, education, and well-being, especially for our senior residents.

About the programs

At the Manhattan Fire Protection District, we believe in protecting our community beyond emergency response—we are committed to proactive safety, education, and well-being, especially for our senior residents. As individuals age, new challenges arise, from fall prevention to home safety and emergency preparedness. Our senior-focused programs are designed to empower older adults, helping them stay informed, independent, and safe.

By participating in these programs, seniors can reduce risks, enhance their quality of life, and build connections within the community. Whether it’s learning about fraud prevention, installing essential safety equipment, or simply staying engaged with others, these services offer practical benefits that can make a real difference. Best of all, many of these programs are completely free of charge, ensuring that every senior has access to the resources they need.

Our dedicated team works tirelessly to provide knowledge, tools, and support—because your safety matters, at every stage of life. Explore the programs below to see how we can help you or your loved ones.

A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but they don’t have to be a part of aging. This evidence-based program helps seniors regain confidence, stay active, and reduce their risk of falling. Participants will learn simple strength and balance exercises, practical lifestyle adjustments, and strategies to maintain independence.

Offered in Manhattan (Spring) and Peotone (Fall)

File of Life Program

When every second counts, having important medical information readily available can save a life. The File of Life is a free card that lists vital health details—such as medications, allergies, and emergency contacts—stored in a red plastic pocket on your refrigerator for first responders to access quickly.

Free Smoke Detector Program

A working smoke detector is one of the most effective life-saving tools in your home. Seniors in single-family residences can receive a free smoke detector and battery, with firefighters available to assist with installation.

Residential Knox Box Program

In an emergency, quick access to your home can mean the difference between life and death. A Knox Box allows first responders to enter without forced entry, ensuring faster care while preventing property damage. Available for both residential and commercial properties in our fire district.

Senior Fire Safety & Fall Prevention Presentations

Our Fire & Life Safety Educator provides engaging presentations throughout the year, covering fire prevention, fall prevention, and other essential safety topics. These sessions help seniors stay prepared and informed about risks inside and outside their homes.

Fire Station Tours for Seniors

Want to see how a fire station operates? Seniors are invited to tour Stations 81 (Manhattan) and 83 (Peotone) to learn about our firefighting equipment, daily operations, and emergency response. Groups can also request a short safety presentation during their visit.
