Multiple Vehicle Accidents on Peotone-Wilmington Road Result in Extended Road Closure

(July 29, 2025) Manhattan, IL – At approximately 10:45 a.m., the Manhattan Fire Protection District (MFPD) responded to a motor vehicle accident on Peotone- Wilmington Road near 120th Avenue. Upon arrival and initial assessment, the incident was upgraded to an extrication response due to the severity of the crash.

The accident involved a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck. The car sustained heavy front-end damage with the driver pinned inside. Three patients were evaluated on scene; two refused medical treatment and one was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office responded and remains involved in the investigation.

Later, at approximately 12:35 p.m., MFPD was dispatched to a second motor vehicle accident involving a semi-truck hauling a propane tanker. The tanker was leaking, and the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. An extrication response was requested. Crews successfully stopped the leak, extricated the driver, and transported the patient for medical care.

E-Environmental was contacted to assist with hazardous materials cleanup, and Will County Emergency Management Agency supported traffic control operations.

Peotone-Wilmington Road will remain closed for several hours due to the ongoing response and cleanup efforts. Mutual aid was provided by the Elwood Fire Protection District, New Lenox Fire Protection District, and Wilmington Fire Protection District. Rendell’s Towing was on the scene assisting with the semi recovery.
