The Manhattan Fire Protection District (MFPD) uses Paramedic Billing Services (PBS) for EMS/ambulance billing. The applicable fees are set by ordinance of the District’s Board of Trustees in accordance with state and federal law. You will not be charged out-of-pocket for EMS/ambulance services provided by the District. MFPD does not balance bill fire district residents for EMS/Ambulance services. MFPD also does not charge for refusal of service and transport. We only collect what your insurance pays. Should you receive a bill from PBS/MFPD, please contact PBS directly using the telephone number printed on your bill. You may, however, receive a letter in the mail from PBS requesting a signature releasing their ability to bill your insurance. This may happen if you are unable to sign when transported.
However, there are times we may require another fire department to respond to an incident. This may happen if MFPD is already handling too many calls, or if the neighboring department is able to more quickly respond to the emergency. If a different fire department provides EMS/ambulance services, you may be subject to their ambulance billing rates and policies. In those cases, you may receive a bill for their services, even if you are a resident of our fire district.
For billing questions, contact PBS directly. For general MFPD questions, contact our office at (815) 478-3197.
